New discoveries in science are enabled by the convergence of technological advances to address significant scientific challenges. The Bindley Bioscience Center’s research core technologies represent advancements that support interdisciplinary research areas of the center. The interdisciplinary research areas represent major scientific challenges in health and disease-based research that require expertise on the Purdue campus that transcends traditional academic boundaries. Each research area includes a different cross-section of academic disciplines that, when integrated with the Bindley’s new core technologies, provides a high impact on society through the generation of new scientific knowledge, the development and commercialization of new technologies, and their translation to promote human health. Professor Barry Wanner, Department of Biological Sciences, quoted in New York Times
The article mentions the International Escherichia Coli Alliance, a group to organize projects that many research laboratories could do together. This group is led by Dr. Wanner, with partial support from the Bindley Bioscience Center. The group hopes to produce a simplified version of E. coli with only around 1,000 genes within two years. Bindley Scientist to lecture and lead workshop at the NIH
Our Biophysical Analysis Research Scientist, Dr. John Burgner, has been invited to serve as a faculty member for two NIH workshops in September. On September 19th, John will join forces with Peter Schuck (NIH) to present Basic Introduction To Principles and Practice of Analytical Ultracentrifugation, a practical and theoretical workshop to introduce novices to analytical ultracentrifugation and to modern data analysis software packages. Immediately following this introductory workshop on Sept 20 and 21, John will serve as an instructor for Workshop On Hydrodynamic and Thermodynamic Sedimentation Analysis With SEDFIT and SEDPHAT for the Characterization of Biological Macromolecules in Solution, with Dr. Alexandra Solovyova (Glasgow University) and Peter Schuck. The team will present hydrodynamic and thermodynamic approaches to sedimentation equilibrium and sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation. As indicated in the workshop title, these discussions will center around technical strategy implementation using the software SEDFIT and SEDPHAT. Learn More

Hermodson joins Wodicka to lead Bindley Bioscience Center
Mark A. Hermodson, a professor of biochemistry at Purdue University, has been promoted to interim co-director of the Bindley Bioscience Center at Discovery Park. Hermodson has been the center's deputy director since 2003 and is interim associate dean for research in the College of Agriculture. He shares the directorship with George R.
